Getting around

Getting around Seattle without a car

You do not need a car in downtown Seattle. Link light rail's 1 Line runs from SeaTac/Airport Station through downtown (Sound Transit quotes 38 minutes airport to downtown, every 8 to 10 minutes most of the day) and on to Capitol Hill and the University District; the Seattle Center Monorail links Westlake Center and the Space Needle in about 2 minutes; and the King County Water Taxi crosses from Pier 50 to West Seattle in about 10 to 15 minutes. Pay with an ORCA card or by contactless where accepted.

Link light rail: the backbone

The 1 Line, which Sound Transit now runs between Lynnwood and Federal Way, is the line visitors use most. Key stops:

  • SeaTac/Airport. Sound Transit quotes 38 minutes to downtown, with trains every 8 to 10 minutes most of the day. From baggage claim, follow the signs for Link light rail. Full details in our airport light rail guide.
  • Stadium and International District/Chinatown for Lumen Field, T-Mobile Park and the Chinatown-International District.
  • Pioneer Square, Symphony and Westlake downtown. Westlake is about a 7-minute walk from our building.
  • Capitol Hill and the University District to the north.

When trains have stopped for the night, Sound Transit says a night bus runs between the airport and downtown about every 30 minutes.

The Seattle Center Monorail

The monorail runs directly between Westlake Center (400 Pine St, 3rd floor, at 5th and Pine) and Seattle Center, next to the Space Needle, MoPOP and Chihuly Garden and Glass. The ride takes about 2 minutes. It is also the easy way to a Kraken game at Climate Pledge Arena.

Walking

Downtown Seattle is compact but hilly. From our building at 1400 Hubbell Place:

  • Seattle Convention Center: 3 minutes.
  • Pacific Place and Westlake: about 7 minutes.
  • Seattle Art Museum: about 12 minutes.
  • Pike Place Market: about 15 minutes, downhill on the way there.
  • Capitol Hill: about 10 minutes uphill on Pike or Pine.

Buses

King County Metro buses cover the whole city, with many routes running along Third Avenue downtown. Use a trip planner app for live times.

The Water Taxi and ferries

  • King County Water Taxi from Pier 50 to West Seattle, about 10 to 15 minutes per King County, and to Vashon Island. King County says youth 18 and younger always ride free.
  • Washington State Ferries leave from Colman Dock on the downtown waterfront, about a 20-minute walk from us. Check the WSDOT site for routes and schedules.
