Staying near Fred Hutch and UW Medicine

Fred Hutch's main clinic campus is at 1100 Fairview Ave N in South Lake Union, about 1 mile in a straight line from our downtown Seattle apartments. UW Medical Center–Montlake (1959 NE Pacific St) is about 2.7 miles away and sits across the street from University of Washington light rail station, a direct ride from Westlake Station, about 7 minutes' walk from us. Each apartment has two bedrooms, a full kitchen and an in-unit washer & dryer.

Two different campuses, two different trips

Families coming to Seattle for cancer care or specialty treatment often hear "Fred Hutch" and "UW Medicine" together. Fred Hutch Cancer Center works with UW Medicine, but the places you will visit can be in different neighborhoods. Before you choose where to stay, ask your care coordinator which addresses your appointments are at:

  • Fred Hutch, South Lake Union: 1100 Fairview Ave N, Seattle, per Fred Hutch's locations page. This is the main outpatient clinic campus.
  • UW Medical Center–Montlake: 1959 NE Pacific St, Seattle, on the University of Washington campus.
  • Harborview Medical Center and other UW Medicine sites on First Hill are covered in our First Hill hospitals guide.

Getting to Fred Hutch from downtown

Our building at 1400 Hubbell Place is about 1.0 mile in a straight line from Fred Hutch's South Lake Union campus, measured from OpenStreetMap coordinates. That is walkable for a healthy companion, but most patients will prefer a short car or ride-hail trip, especially on treatment days. Garage parking for compact cars is available in our building on request (SUVs do not fit); our parking guide explains how it works.

Fred Hutch also offers its own lodging. Its website lists Behnke Family House at 207 Pontius Ave N and Pete Gross House at 525 Minor Ave N, both near the clinic with shuttle service, and Pete Gross House is designed for transplant patients who need extra infection precautions. If your care team recommends one of these, follow that advice. Families who need more room, want a full kitchen, or are waiting for a place to open sometimes look for a furnished apartment instead.

Getting to UW Medical Center–Montlake

The easiest route is Link light rail. Walk about 7 minutes to Westlake Station and take a northbound train to University of Washington Station (3720 Montlake Blvd NE). Sound Transit lists the station as accessible, and UW Medicine notes the medical center is across the street from it. UW Medical Center is about 2.7 miles from our building in a straight line.

If you are driving, UW Medicine's directions page explains its patient garages and current construction detours.

What a 2-bedroom apartment offers during treatment

Treatment stays often run for weeks and involve more than one person: a patient, a main caregiver, and family members who come and go. A furnished 2-bedroom apartment can help with:

  • Separate bedrooms, so a caregiver can rest while the patient sleeps, or two relatives can take turns.
  • A full kitchen, for meals that suit a treatment diet and for keeping food and medicines in the fridge.
  • An in-unit washer & dryer in every apartment, so you don't need a laundromat.
  • A building with a front-desk concierge and an on-site building manager.
  • Professional cleaning after every stay.

All three apartments are in one downtown Seattle building. The Two-Bath 2BR has two full bathrooms, which helps when a patient needs a bathroom of their own. The Lumière 2BR sleeps 6, and the Top-Floor 2BR sleeps 5 and has portable in-unit air conditioning.

Please note what we are not: we are not affiliated with Fred Hutch or UW Medicine, we are not a medical facility, and we do not provide care, transport or special cleaning protocols. Ask your care team whether an apartment stay is appropriate for your treatment plan.

Practical tips for families

  • Ask for a letter. Some insurers, employers and charities reimburse lodging; your care team or social worker can tell you what documents they need.
  • Plan for flexibility. Treatment schedules change. Our cancellation policy is written out on the policies page: full refund 30 or more days before arrival, 50% at 14–29 days, none under 14 days.
  • Arrive by light rail. Link runs direct from Sea-Tac to Westlake; see our airport guide.
  • Find quiet time. Our rainy-day guide lists calm indoor places nearby, such as the Seattle Central Library.
