A Capitol Hill food walk from the Convention Center

Capitol Hill, one of Seattle's busiest restaurant and bar neighborhoods, starts just east of the Seattle Convention Center. From our apartments it is about a 10-minute walk up Pike or Pine Street, by the time quoted in our listings. The Pike/Pine corridor, Broadway and Cal Anderson Park are the core, and Capitol Hill light rail station sits just northwest of the park.

Why Capitol Hill after a show day

When a convention lets out, restaurants next to the convention center fill up fast. Capitol Hill is a short walk uphill and has far more choice: dozens of restaurants, cafés, bakeries and bars spread across a few blocks. It is also where many show attendees end up for after-parties and meetups, so it is worth knowing the way.

The route

From our building at 1400 Hubbell Place:

  • Head east on Pike Street or Pine Street. Both cross over Interstate 5 next to the convention center. Summit, at 900 Pine Street, sits right on the Pine Street route.
  • Keep climbing. The streets rise steadily up the hill. Within about 10 minutes, per the walking time in our listings, you are in Capitol Hill's Pike/Pine corridor.
  • Continue to Broadway for the neighborhood's main north–south street, or to 10th and 11th Avenues for Cal Anderson Park and the bookstore.

Allow more time if you are walking with a group straight out of a session. The return is all downhill.

Three anchors to navigate by

The Pike/Pine corridor. The blocks of Pike and Pine east of the freeway are packed with restaurants and bars in older brick buildings. This is where to look for dinner if you just want to walk until something looks good.

Cal Anderson Park, 1635 11th Ave. Seattle Parks calls it the hub of Capitol Hill. It has a fountain and reflecting pool, a lighted sports field, a children's play area and oversize chess boards, and it sits just southeast of the light rail station. The city lists park hours as 4:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m.

Elliott Bay Book Company, 1521 10th Ave. One of Seattle's best-known independent bookstores, open 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. every day, per its website. It is a good place to wait out a shower before dinner.

Planning a group dinner

  • Book ahead on show nights. During PAX West, Emerald City Comic Con and big medical meetings, popular places fill early.
  • Check current hours. Restaurants change hours and close often; check a restaurant's own site before you go. We don't list restaurant names here because they change.
  • Split up and meet at the park. For larger groups, Cal Anderson Park is an easy meeting point.
  • Eat in. If everyone is tired, every one of our apartments has a full kitchen, and picking up groceries on the walk home is easy.

Getting back

  • Walk: about 10 minutes downhill.
  • Light rail: Capitol Hill Station is one stop from Westlake on Link. From Westlake it is about a 7-minute walk to our building.
